Accessibility
Sharp Play Hub is built to be usable by as many people as possible, aiming to align with WCAG 2.1 AA principles. Where we fall short, we would rather say so than claim otherwise.
What we do
- Semantic HTML landmarks, headings, and a "Skip to main content" link on every page.
- A visible focus ring on every interactive control, site-wide, rather than relying on the browser default.
- Full keyboard operation of the menu, every button, every form, and all four games.
- Respect for the
prefers-reduced-motionsetting, which disables the celebration effects, the floating hero tiles, and every non-essential transition. - Live status messages announced to screen readers as you play, describing the state of the game rather than just the fact that something happened.
- Colour is never the only carrier of meaning: every bubble carries a distinct symbol as well as a colour, each fruit is a distinct shape rather than a coloured ball, a jigsaw piece that is home gains an outline as well as a colour, and every grid square is named in its screen-reader label.
Keyboard controls, game by game
Bubble Pop
- Tab to the board, then aim with the left and right arrows.
- Space or Enter fires the bubble, and also starts the game.
- The aim buttons, FIRE button and Start button are ordinary buttons in the tab order.
- Every bubble carries a symbol as well as a colour, so matching never depends on colour vision.
Fruit Slice
- Tab to the play area, then move the crosshair with the arrow keys.
- Space or Enter slices a cross centred on the crosshair. The on-screen pad does the same.
- This is the least comfortable of the four games on a keyboard, and we say so rather than claim otherwise.
Cosmic Jigsaw
- Tab to the board, then move between pieces with the arrow keys. Only the focused piece is in the tab order, so Tab moves past the board rather than through all twenty-five squares.
- Space or Enter picks a piece up, then swaps it with the next piece you choose. Escape puts it back down.
- Every slot is announced with its row, its column, which numbered piece it currently holds, and whether that piece is in the right place.
- Tab past the board to reach the three size buttons, the three picture thumbnails, Shuffle, and the Preview toggle.
Mole Tap
- Tab to the field, then press 1 to 9 to strike the matching burrow, reading left to right and top to bottom.
- Each burrow is also a button, so Tab and Enter work if you prefer.
- Each burrow is announced as empty or as holding a risen mole.
Known limits
Fruit Slice and Bubble Pop depend on tracking moving objects, and we have not found a way to make either genuinely playable without sight. Cosmic Jigsaw is a picture puzzle: it is keyboard-complete and every slot announces which piece it holds and whether that piece is home, but reassembling a picture you cannot see is a different game from the one we designed, and we will not claim otherwise. Mole Tap is grid-based, keyboard-complete, and we believe genuinely playable with a screen reader.
The five-by-five jigsaw is twenty-five small targets; on a very small phone screen they may sit below the comfortable touch-target size even though the board scales down with the viewport. The three-by-three size does not have this problem.
